Every spring without fail, I find myself standing in front of a wardrobe full of clothes with absolutely nothing to wear. Sound familiar? I used to think the solution was buying more — a new dress here, a trendy top there — but all it ever did was create more noise and more decision fatigue. This year I did something different. I stripped it right back and built a capsule wardrobe with intention, and honestly? It’s been a game changer.
These are the 12 pieces I actually reach for. Not aspirational buys that look good on a hanger but never quite work in real life — the real ones. The ones that earn their place.
1. A Well-Cut White Shirt The one piece that genuinely does everything. I wear mine tucked into wide-leg trousers for work, half-tucked with jeans at the weekend, and fully open over a slip dress for evenings. Invest in a good fabric — linen or a cotton-poplin blend — and it’ll repay you a hundred times over.
2. Straight-Leg Mid-Wash Jeans Not skinny, not wide, just straight. This is the cut that flatters almost every body shape and works with almost every top. I spent years sleeping on straight-leg jeans and now I own three pairs. No regrets.
3. A Linen Blazer in a Neutral Ivory, camel, beige — pick your neutral and don’t look back. A linen blazer is the ultimate spring layering piece. It makes a basic outfit look intentional in about thirty seconds. I’ve been wearing mine from & Other Stories on repeat.
4. A Simple Fitted Crew-Neck Tee White, black or grey. That’s it. This isn’t the place for prints or logos — save those for your personality pieces. A good quality basic tee is the backbone of every outfit in this wardrobe and it needs to fit properly. Worth spending a little more to get it right.
5. Wide-Leg Tailored Trousers My single biggest style upgrade of the last two years. Wide-leg trousers instantly make an outfit look more put-together — they’re comfortable, they’re versatile and they photograph beautifully. I wear mine with everything from a crop top to an oversized shirt.
6. A Midi Slip Dress Satin or silk-feel, in a neutral or a soft muted tone. Wear it alone in warm weather, layer it under your blazer or over a fitted tee when it’s cooler. The midi slip dress is the most versatile dress shape I own and I genuinely wear mine year round.
That’s it. Six pieces, endless combinations. The whole point of a capsule wardrobe isn’t to have less — it’s to have exactly enough, with nothing wasted. Once I stopped chasing trends and started building around pieces I genuinely love, getting dressed became something I actually enjoyed again.
